That Yarn Store - Causes We Like

Holiday Toy Drive for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles

Sarah has been working in development at Childrens Hospital for almost three months. To get into the spirit of volunteerism that has been the hospital’s mainstay since its founding in 1901, and to help replace the massive quantity of toys recalled last summer that has sadly threatened to wipe the toy shelves at the hospital clean, Sarah thought this would be a wonderful opportunity for That Yarn Store to show its support of our really sick kids who will be spending their Hannukahs, Christmases and Kwanzas in the hospital. Toys collected at this time of year also get stashed away for anytime a new child comes to the hospital, for the siblings of a hospitalized child hanging out with their families, for birthdays, for when a kid has shown exceptional bravery in the face of nasty pain that will just tear your heart out – imagine – and when the unfailingly kind and lovely people at the hospital feel like it’s just high time for some child to get a new toy. Also, the toys and games line the shelves of the Chase Child Life play centers on each floor, so that sick kids, who are maybe on the mend and are itching to get out of bed and PLAY can have fun things to do.

So, because Childrens Hospital is also wildly concerned with safety, as in no lead paint today, thank you, and has a stringent Infection Control Policy, we would be so happy if you would donate an item from this list and placing it, new in its original packaging and unwrapped, in the big box in our store marked, appropriately: CHILDRENS HOSPITAL HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE. The box will be in the store from mid-November to December 17th, Thank you so much!

afghans for afghans
is looking for newborn hats (not
preemies) Due date Dec. 3rd

That Yarn Store will collect your donated items and pass them along.

The CURE Hospital in Kabul has asked us to send these
specific wool items for
newborns:

* newborn baby hats

-- head circumference of 10" - 15"
-- caps need to cover ears
-- ear flaps and under-chin ties are acceptable
-- hats need some stretch for comfort over forehead

* newborn baby socks

-- foot length of 2.5" - 3.5"
-- basic socks with heels and cover for the lower leg
-- no booties or slippers, please
-- for knitters only (sorry, we just haven't seen a
crochet sock version that
functions as well as knit)

* baby blankets

-- minimum 40" x 30" (please, no smaller)
-- wonderful for crocheters, as crochet goes faster
and is thicker generally
-- please think dense, not lacy stitches

[Note, we do not need items for premature babies. Only
the newborn sizes
above.]

Important points to review:

* Use wool (or other animal fiber) to provide maximum
utility in harsh
weather. Read FIBER DETAILS here:
http://www.afghansf orafghans. org/aboutfibers. html
* Please avoid white and very light colors that soil
more easily. Afghans
like all colors. Mix up a bright and cheery palette.
Use up those wool oddballs.
* Knit or crochet your favorite pattern or try
something new.
* Avoid lacy or airy patterns.
* We do not accept used items, acrylics, scarves,
slippers, ponchos, ear
warmers, felted items, quilts, fleece anything,
store-bought merchandise, loomed
items, unassembled squares, or toys.
* Email us when you send your gift, and we will
acknowledge you by email.
* If you want confirmation that your package has
arrived in San Francisco,
please enclose a self-addressed stamped card or
envelope, and we will mail it
back to you. Or, use the signature request service of
the delivery agent.

Please join us, and please invite others to join us,
too. Nothing is stable
in Afghanistan. We must take advantage of these
precious shipping and
distribution opportunities when they arise. We can
never plan far ahead because of the
situation.

The CURE Hospital delivers newborns every day -- more
than 300 babies each
month. CURE is one of the few hospitals that serves
very sick babies in their
neonatal unit.

Specific newborn campaign details are here for
reference:

Our general guidelines and mailing addresses are here:

We only send what is specifically requested by our
partner relief agencies.

Stitches from the Heart

Stitches from the Heart is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that sends handmade clothing, blankets, and love to premature babies all across the nation. We also have a senior program that helps seniors help others by donating yarn and supplies.

General Information

  1. Yarns and materials used must be washable, and soft. Please, no straight wool items.
  2. Wash items that get dirty, but don't use fabric softeners or perfumes. Babies can have very sensitive skin.
  3. Sizes are approximate and the finished product may be larger or smaller than the pattern. It's ok, so are the babies! The hospital will find the right size for the right baby.
  4. Booties stay on feet better if they have a ribbon or yarn tie around the ankle.
  5. If you attach a pompom or ribbon to an item, please be sure they are securely fastened!

Approximate Measurements

Of course, sizes for premature babies are going to be small, but hopefully the following approximate measurements will give you an idea of the sizes you're stitching for.
